"The Soul of Man under Socialism" is an 1891 essay by Oscar Wilde in which he expounds a libertarian socialist worldview and a critique of charity.[1] The writing of "The Soul of Man" followed Wilde's conversion to anarchist philosophy, following his reading of the works of Peter Kropotkin. In "The Soul of Man" Wilde argues that, under capitalism, "the majority of people spoil their lives by an unhealthy and exaggerated altruism—are forced, indeed, so to spoil them" instead of realising their true talents, they waste their time solving the social problems caused by capitalism, without taking their common cause away. Thus, caring people "seriously and very sentimentally set themselves to the task of remedying the evils that they see in poverty but their remedies do not cure the disease they merely prolong it" because, as Wilde puts it, "the proper aim is to try and reconstruct society on such a basis that poverty will be impossible."

This is a brilliant essay that Oscar Wilde wrote in 1891 that speaks to the benefits of libertarian socialism. Yes, there is such a subcategory within the basic definition of socialism. Libertarian socialism is more commonly known as libertarianism today. Surprised?

Wilde opines that government actually hinders poorer people from doing better for themselves by giving them handouts, and that capitalism helps that along, particularly by the general public thinking that charity is good, but it really doesn’t help the poor; it just keeps them alive and doesn’t aid them in bettering themselves out of abject poverty.

This is a beautifully written essay, worthy of checking it out and reading. One can draw his own conclusions, and I assert that one will see the logic in most of what Wilde wrote here.

This book is amazing to say the least. I had been trying over the past 6 months, to rationalize the realizations I'd been having about the social structures that make up the world we live in. A world that is majority capitalistic and materialistic. My ideas just weren't as full and developed as Oscar Wilde's ideas. This book completed a large lapse in my understanding of human nature. I feel tons wiser after reading this book. Despite the book being merely a short essay, the piece had a lot of bang for its buck and included so much substance. Definitely recommend this book to anyone wondering about the underlying structure of the beautiful chaos in which this world was constructed.
food for deep analytical thinking
Some extreme views to be challenged but overall relevant to today's society
A+
Still relevant
Outstanding!
It makes an interesting read and very thought provoking. I particularly like the property subject , very true.
Interesting perspective on Socialism...worth reading...draw your own conclusions...
